Day 30 photos, the before and after

Day 30

Day 1

Day 30

Day 1

Day 30

Day 1

The end of 30 in 30 and a new beginning

So - that's it the end of the 30 lbs in 30 days Challenge with Dax Moy. In common with many of my fellow 30 in 30 guinea pigs I realise that this may be the end of the 30 days programme but it is not the end of the journey for me. I have achieved an amazing change in the last month. Not 30 lbs but over 13 and a lot of inches too but the biggest change has been a change in lifestyle and commitment. I now know what I can achieve in terms of healthy eating and that I can dedicate more of my time to physical activity.
Although I have a long list of things I'm not ready to give up forever I am amazed that I did not wake up this morning and think woo hoo I can have a coffee. In fact I'm planning to stay off coffee at least until I come back from my holidays and I can have Monmouth again.
Last night I was out with my sister and we stopped at Cuba Libra on the way out to dinner, she had a mohito and I had a delicious glass of water with lime wedges and mint in it - on any other programme I would have had a margerita.
I have learned something about myself and motivation: my commitment to Dax enabled me to stick with this programme in a way that I would not have done if I had started it on my own but having done it and loved the results I know I can now make that commitment to myself.
I have learned is that it is possible to stay ED friendly when away at a conference, stuck in all day meetings with nothing provided apart from biscuits or when you are eating out. It just needs planning, so I have learned to plan.
I have learned that (without coffee and alcohol, I think) I can get to bed and to sleep around 10.30 and wake up feeling refreshed at about 6.30.
I have learned that there is time in my day for 3 workouts so there is definitely time in my day for 2.
So now, I'm going to be honest about the next 4 weeks. I won't stick to the ED but nor am I going to go crazy and undo everything. It is not that I cannot stay ED in France and Italy. It is that I choose not to. So I'm going to work at it but not 100% of the time. I will do at least 2 workouts a day and I will come back no larger than I am now.
When I'm back I'm going to set my inch loss goals. I think the sensible thing then would be to do ED again and add the eliminated foods back in properly so I can evaluate their place in my diet.
I'll keep in touch when I can but I may well be off for the whole four weeks.
and the final results are:
Chest now 35” down 2 1/2”
Waist (at navel) now 31 1/2” down 3 1/2
Hips now 39 1/2” down 2 1/2
Left thigh now 24” down 1 1/2
Right thigh now 24 1/2” down 1 1/2
Left calf now 15 3/4” down 1/2
Right calf now 15 1/2” down 1/2
Left arm now 12 3/8” down 1 5/8
Right arm now 11 7/8” down 2 1/8
That's a final tally of 13 1/2 lbs and 16 inches.

Monday

Well, I've learned that even if I stick religiously to the ED, our carb cycle and Eat stop Eat, over four days with no exercise I will start to undo the good I have done. They are only tiny gains but cautionary.
Monday (loss/gain (sniff) since Thursday) [loss since start]
weight 168.5 (+1) [-10.5]
chest 35 (same) [-2.5]
waist 32.25 (+0.25) [-2.75]
hips 39.5 (-0.25) [-2.5]
L thigh 24.25 (same) [-1.25]
R thigh 24.5 (same) [-1.5]
L calf 15.625 (+0.25) [-0.375]
R calf 15.5 (same) [-0.5]
L arm 12.375 (same) [-1.625]
R arm 11.875 (same) [-2.125]
TOTAL (+0.25) [15 1/8]

I managed pilates this morning and an adapted power circuit workout this afternoon (down from 86 reps to 50 but it's better than none) and replaced the back arching walkout with a pilates cat (or 10). Got my heart rate up and I feel energised for it. Will see what I can do tomorrow morning before the osteo. I definitely feel less broken.

Have enjoyed my treats today: yoghurt with berries and tomatoes with my nuts at snack time. I even found some brown rice sushi. Since when did a treat not involve chocolate or sugar? One final fast tomorrow and the final weigh in on Wednesday.

Sunday - 2 days to go

Dax Moy's 30 lbs in 30 days challenge

I'm hanging in there. Still no exercise to speak of today - back twinges at random moments and I really want to be totally fit when we go on holiday at the end of the week. I got the foam roller out yesterday and found some tight spots round my mid to lower back. I managed to release them a bit and repeated today so it is looking better but still a way off 100%.

I've got my regular pilates session first thing tomorrow so I'm hoping that between us we can loosen me off enough to do something later in the day. I fear I may be becoming exercise addicted.

Food today was good - smoked salmon and scrambled eggs for breakfast. Then had lunch out, green salad and a delicious raw cabbage salad with a salmon and mackerel terrine thing which was as close to ED friendly protein as I could get. Supper was our usual Sunday night roast chicken but with cauliflower for a change - not my favourite vegetable: too bland so I really craved the potatoes that the rest of the family had but I held out. Tomorrow is a carb day which is great, the fridge is full of berries and there are some lovely tomatoes waiting for me too.

Saturday 18 July 2009

Saturday - still on the bench

Not much to say for myself. The back is a little better but not much. I have managed some pilates and now I'm off to try the foam roller. My self diagnosis is that I have tight muscles in my back and hamstrings which are pulling me out of alignement and that's was causing the pain, so while I wait to see the bone cracker osteo I'm doing everything I can to loosen up. If tomorow my back improves again I might try the first few moves of the Power Circuit. Probably only the 20 reps we started with at the beginning, not the 84 I had got up to.

I have been concerned since I hurt my back that I would find it hard to get back into the exercise when it is sorted - particularly as we go on holiday on Thursday. I have had great results on this programme and my target is another two incles off waist and hips. If magically I could stop the weight loss off my chest that would be good :-). So I shall be taking some advice from Dax about how to go on from here. I am determined to reach this goal, and to find the way to live (eat and exercise) which means I am never back up where I have been. I feel so in tune with that goal that I know I will get back to the exercises as soon as I am passed fit.

Friday 17 July 2009

Friday evening

Well I'm feeling much better but it has been really strange doing no workouts at all today. The same thing happened yesterday though - by the evening I felt much better but a night of limited mobility meant that I had seized up again in the morning. I'll have to see how tomorrow goes. I'm hoping that I'll be up to some gentle pilates movements. I'm not getting to an osteopath til Tuesday which is a real bore. If I start to feel much better before then I'll have to trust myself...hmm

I managed to stay on the fast - I took one ibuprofen this morning and then my dad gave me a massage with some ibuprofen gel this afternoon and that saw me through until after dinner.

I was starving by the time we ate - I don't think my dinner of chicken curry and green beans even hit the sides. I know I kept eating long after I had had enough. Think it was just the boredom - not eaten all day and not enough else to distract me. I'll have to chalk that one up to experience but if I do Eat Stop Eat again after the end of 30 in 30 I'll have to make sure I control that impulse. Its the first time I've done that since the programme started. Every other time I've eaten I have stopped myself when I have had enough. In fact that has been one of the joys, realising that I can stop eating.

In my misery this morning I realised that I did not post my results from yesterday morning (here's hoping enforced idleness doesn't undo it all):

(loss since Monday) [total loss]
weight 167.5 (-1) [-11.5]
chest 35 (same) [-2.5]
waist 32 (same) [-3]
hips 39.75 (-0.25) [-2.25]
L thigh 24.25 (-0.25) [-1.25]
R thigh 24.5 (-0.5) [-1.5]
L calf 15.375 (same) [-0.625]
R calf 15.5 (+0.125) [-0.5] - weird that gain!
L arm 12.375 (-0.125) [-1.625]
R arm 11.875 (-0.125) [-2.125]
TOTAL INCH LOSS (-1 1/8) 15 3/8

Well that's it. I'm off for an early night

Friday morning - miserable and in pain

I didn't post last night because I was feeling so sorry for myself.
I put my back out in the shower after the new workout yesterday morning - you can check out the moves on youtube, just search "dax moy bodyweight training". We're not doing all of the ones in the videos, just the easier ones :-)). I know it wasn't the workout itself as I've done it twice before. I just think I didn't stretch out enough afterwards. So I dropped the last two workouts yesterday and I am still not up to anything today.
I am gutted. I was really fired up for the end of the programme, very focussed, and apart from anything else I have actually enjoyed the amount of exercise I've been getting. I've got calls out to two osteopaths and I've just got to wait and see how that pans out. My back eased over the course of yesterday but it has seized up again overnight. So I'm going to get up from my computer and go and have a hot bath and some non elimination diet friendly ibuprofen.

Wednesday

Day 24 of the 30 lbs in 30 days challenge with Dax Moy

I've been really good about getting myself to bed - but that means sometimes I don't get to the computer, somehow I never feel like blogging until I've done my workouts and eaten.

I can barely remember what I did yesterday but I know that today I am feeling really tired. All my reps are down. One reason may be that I played an hour of tennis this morning, between workout 1 and workout 2. I decided against doing any more substituting as I think the workouts are designed for maximum fat burning and I really want to give it everything I have for the last push. Yesterday, I took my son swimming and did all 3 workout as well so it may just be the extra is too much.

Dax has finally posted the videos for the body weight workout. So that's what we start with tomorrow. I'm glad I've already had a go - I'd be all over the place if I were trying to do it from the videos. Expecting to be even more tired tomorrow evening.

But its carb day tomorrow, hoorah

Monday 13 July 2009

Monday - week 4 start

So its weights and measures day again, as last time it falls just after carb up day - but in many ways that just makes it realistic:

Monday (loss since Thusday) [total loss]
weight 168.5 (-2.5) [-10.5]
chest 35 (-0.25) [-2.5]
waist 32 (-1.25) [-3]hips 40 (-0.25) [-2]
L thigh 24.5 (-0.25) [-1]
R thigh 25 (same) [-1]
L calf 15.375 (-0.375) [-0.625]
R calf 15.375 (-0.375) [-0.625]
L arm 12.5 (same) [-1.5]
R arm 12 (same) [-1.5]
TOTAL INCHES LOST (-2.75) [-14.25]

Well that inch and a quarter off my abdomen was amazing. I'm really pleased with how my upper body is starting to look BUT...what I really want to do now is shift some of the fat from my thighs.

Today's been a tough day - I woke up hungry and it never got better. Also - really stiff neck so I just did my pilates session this morning, Dax's meltdown at the studio at lunchtime, got a massage from Dax's colleague, Laurie - who is incredible, and then did an hour and a half karate with my son.

Supper was delicious, tuna, fresh spinach and broccoli with a sprinkling of flaked almonds, and I just about held it together in terms of not being too ratty with the family before I was fed.

Second night on the trot I'm off for a bath and an early bed. This is my major commitment to countdown - absolutely adhering to bedtime

Sunday 12 July 2009

Saturday and Sunday

really mini post - I have a bath waiting and daughters who want to watch an episode of the West Wing.

I've been teaching all week end so did one workout before and 2 together after - really tough.

Food has been great today - carb up day

had roast potatoes and "pudding" - yoghurt with loads of berries

and lots of fresh tomatoes

for breakfast today I tried Dax's spooky porridge and eggs and was surprised at how good it was - got to try to sell it to the kids now.

Just to give you an idea of how hard we are working today I did

180 press ups (the girly version)
277 squats
56 complete spidermen

and loads of lunges and weights as well.

Amazing! I'd never have believed it at the beginning

more coherent posting tomorrow

Friday 10 July 2009

Days 18 and 19

Yesterday Dax had us fasting. The great thing was it was from dinner on day 16 to dinner yesterday so you never have to face a whole day without food and you certainly don't go to bed hungry.

It actually made my day easier - I had an all day meeting so rather than traipsing across town with two snacks and a packed lunch I went with one large bottle of water which I kept refilling.

The meeting was really useful so I came out feeling buoyed. Almost feel asleep in the train on the way home though.

Had a great supper - chicken with onions, griddled courgette - almost my favourite. The kids had cream and spagghetti with their pasta and peas - I was jealous of the peas but it was a low carb day.

I had promised you weights and measures so here's what I posted on the 30 lbs in 30 days Challenge community:

Good morning everyone, scales still disappointing, but over an inch off overall and to be honest it feels like a lot more in the way I am looking and feeling.

Thursday (loss since Monday) [Total]
weight 171 (-1) [8]
chest 35.25 (-0.25) [-2.25]
waist 33.25 (same) [-1.75]
hips 40.25 (-0.5) [-1.75]
L thigh 24.75 (same) [-0.75]
R thigh 25 (-0.25) [-1]
L calf 15.75 (-0.125) [-0.25]
R calf 15.75 (same) [-0.25]
L arm 12.5 (same) [-1.5]
R arm 12 (same) [-2]
TOTAL INCHES (-1.125) [-11.5]

I think the thing that would unlock extra for me would be bed. I was at a fundraiser last night - due to finish at 10 and it went on til 11.30 pm. As I was one of the organisers I couldn't just walk out. there is so much of this in my life during term time. Howevr, next week really does look very quiet so i am going to give everything my all in this final push.

Today I feel absolutely wiped out - got to go one more workout to get in before taking kids out for a meal.

Got a busy busy week-end but will do my best to post

Wednesday 8 July 2009

Wednesday - Day 17

Now that I am in to the swing of this, and since we abandonned daily measuring blogging everyday feels a little over the top.

Yesterday I ducked the meal part of my book group and just turned up for the discussion. By that stage my buddy had filled everyone in on the crazy routine I am following. However, I do think the appreciative comments were genuine. I've also had some positive comments from a couple of people who have not been primed so that was great.

Food wise I'm also in to a swing. Thinking about where my next meal is coming from more than 10 mn in advance makes that so much easier. And I have realised that cooking lunch is quicker than going to the sandwich store (which sells amazing muffins...) as long as I have the right food in the house.

I promised a photo of my having been Dax'd so here it is. To be honest as this was after our "slow and measured workout" it is not as dramatic as some Daxings I had.

Today's gym session I was on my own and I got a sneak preview of the next new workout. It is one of those subtle killers, and I am sure there is some mind over matter stuff too which is fun. Not helped by the fact that Dax makes it look so easy. I'm really looking forward to the blogs when the others have tried it.

You will get an update tomorrrow as its weigh in again - how time flies.

Monday 6 July 2009

Monday, Week 3

I know I said yesterday that I was going to be brief - well I really am. I've got one work out to do, drum practice before my lesson tomorrow and I'm supposed to be meeting Philip at an exhibition in 34 mn - that's not going to happen is it?

Results day today so here they are:

Monday (loss)
weight 172 (same)
chest 35.5 (-0.5)
waist 33.25 (-0.25)
hips 40.75 (same)
L thigh 24.75 (-0.25)
R thigh 25.25 (same)
L calf 15.875 (same)
R calf 15.75 (-0.125)
L arm 12.5 (same)
R arm 12 (same)

So totals are 7lbs and 10 3/8 inches.

Had mega workout with Dax at lunchtime and a long talk about sleep - could be the secret to unlocking the rest of the loss. Will struggle this week - but with determination

Tomorrow you get the before and after a work out with Dax pictures

Sunday 5 July 2009

Day 14 of...

Dax Moy's 30 lbs in 30 days Challenge

This is going to be brief - its late.

I've had a great day - managed to eat all three meals with my family and not cook anything special for me:

I left out the bread at breakfast, between us we had scrambled eggs, they had bacon, I had smoked salmon and Philip and Nick tucked into the perculiar English delicacy that is black pudding.

We had guests for lunch - made our own version of Salade Nicoise (no olives, no anchovies), I just avoided the tomatoes and the potatoes. Had no trouble not drinking which was interesting, even when Philip opened the bottle of bubbly. I just felt "I'm not going there". Desert was more of a challenge. I took a gang of kids down to our favourite chocolate shop to buy ice creams - they are amazing and if any chocolate could be ED friendly this would be it. The man is an artist. I'm not going to link to his site because that would just be cruel.

Supper was roast chicken, roast potatoes, again avoided by yours truly., broccoli and griddled asparagus. We must be at the last of the English asparagus - it is silly money again, like it was at the beginning of the season but as we don't eat it the rest of the year I mentally justify it as if we were spreading the cost over the whole year.

I took my daughters to get their ears pierced in the morning and about one hour after breakfast was ravenously hungry - and had no snack with me - managed to hold out for another hour and bought some plain pecans and almonds. It was a lesson, it can be really hard to find the right food on the move.

Today has been one hell of a day on the workout front - we are now doing a rotation of 5 different workouts and it was definitely the three tough ones. I also braved it and upped my weights - so I'm on to 4 kg. That slowed me down a bit but the step up was less hard than I anticipated.

For what was supposed to be a brief post that went on a bit.

Its weigh in day tomorrow - part nervous part excited.

Good night

Saturday 4 July 2009

Saturday, Week 2

An early post from me - Philip and I are going out tonight so I know I'll just come in and flop straight into bed -

Two great workouts so far and just off to do the third. I improved my densities on the meltdown and "reset" on the second - meaning I have a higher target for all the reps in the exercises I do - did that one with Philip which was great because he could do with some diet and exercise help too so I'm delighted he's getting on board with me - it means this will be more sustainable long term.

Also really enjoying my fruit and a couple of slices of rye bread - today is carb day! and all over the 30 in 30 community we are celebrating.

that's all folks but you can always find out more about Dax's programmes at http://www.mylondonpersonaltrainer.com/

Friday 3 July 2009

Days 11 and 12

I didn't post last night because I had a great evening at my son's school concert and then we went out as a family to our favourite restaurant. The waiter there already knows that I am on what my family refers to my "crazy health and fitness thing" but he still looks at me as if I am mad when I turn down his offer of a glass of sparkling wine. I found it tougher than the last time I was there - it was harder to choose ED friendly food that was also low carb and they had a whole new set of deserts... but I didn't crumble.

So yesterday was weights and measures day and I was pretty pleased with the results:

Thursday (loss since Monday) [Total loss since day 1]

weight 172 (-4.5) [-7]

chest 36 (-0.25) [-1.5]

waist 33.5 (-0.5) [-1.5]

hips 40.75 (-0.25) [-1.25]

L thigh 25 (same) [-0.5]

R thigh 25.25 (same) [-0.75]

L calf 15.875 (same) [-0.125]

R calf 15.875 (same) [-0.125]

L arm 12.5 (same) [-1.5]

R arm 12 (same) [-2]

TOTAL (-1) [-9.25]

So more lbs and fewer inches.

However I am really beginning to see the difference - more in my clothes than when I check my flabby belly. I think the belly is a project which is longer than 30 days so I shall be getting Dax's advice on that as we go along.

The workouts continue to be challenging and I am finding that I am tired walking up stairs at the moment. I hope this is my body adjusting to the levels of work. I have stopped counting how many of each exercise we do (since the day I realised I had done over 150 squats).

Yesterday I went to a tutorial - hot hot travel on tube and train - and walking past my favourite Italian Cappuccino vendor (both the coffee and the vendor are Italian) - that was another tough moment. But I got through the whole day without "stimulants" and had planned my snacks and lunch so there was no temptation from the chocolate crispies which appeared at break time. More learning for the future about where my weak points are.

Today was a lot more straightforward - home all day, just juggling workouts around meals.

Had some delicious grilled mackerel fillets at lunch time - so easy, just chucked on some dried herbs (another why don't I do that more often moment).

We also got a new workout today. I did it much too slowly so it will be interesting to see how it pans out the next time I do it. I also think I'm being a wimp with my weights.

I've bought a set of weights but the next step is a jump from 2 and 1/2 kg to over 4 kg and I'm not sure I want to do that.

Didn't get to do the workout with Dax today which was a disappointment - I'm sure he'll be putting me through my paces again on Monday though.

Wednesday 1 July 2009

Day 10

So - I am one third of the way through Dax Moy's 30lbs in 30 days programme. I am finding the current restrictions tough to say nothing of the whole timetabling of meals and snacks and workouts and work.

had great lunch with my dad today -
snapper fillet marinaded in lemon and basil with a lot of bowls of chopped up greenery (celery, avocado, cucumber) it was a real feast and much better than anything we would have had if we had gone out to eat.

After that my own trainer came and gave me a massage. Great feeling but boy do I have some muscles which have been working harder than they are used to. Am thinking I might need to make this a regular weekly thing. I worked out that today I have done over 150 squats!

I must be mad.

But my skin looks so much better and that alone makes it worth it. We'll have to see whether the ED clears my rosacea up completely (and then I'll have the dreaded decision - if its one of the eliminated foods giving it to me can I live without it forever...)

Weights and measures tomorrow. EEK
